Hey CANVAS Creators!

In Fall 2024, we introduced a Content Rating system for WEBTOON CANVAS. This product update helped make WEBTOON CANVAS safer and easier for readers to explore and understand which series are appropriate for their age group or content preferences, while complying with applicable regulatory requirements.

WEBTOON CANVAS is updating our Content Rating system in preparation for the platform to support global distribution across seven languages — English, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Thai, Traditional Chinese, and German — making it easier than ever for Creators to share their stories, grow their fandoms, and monetize their work all over the world.

As part of this update, we’re introducing a more detailed Content Rating questionnaire to help you accurately reflect your series. This helps ensure your series is appropriately available across different regions and local regulations.

What to Expect

Starting April 21st, Creators will be prompted to complete a Content Rating questionnaire when publishing a new episode or creating a new series. Once Content Ratings have been processed and assigned, they will appear on your series shortly thereafter.

You will have 40 days from the update to assign your series a rating. Even if you have previously filled out the Content Rating questionnaire, you must complete it again. If you miss the deadline, a ‘Not Yet Rated ’ rating will automatically be assigned to your series. Series that are assigned ‘Not Yet Rated’ will still be visible on the platform, but only accessible to readers aged 18 years or older.

Your series will receive one of the following ratings:

  • All-Ages: Suitable for all readers. May include mild depictions of cartoon blood.
  • Teen (13+): Suitable for readers age 13 or older. May contain mild fantasy violence, blood, or gore. Minor themes related to mental health are acceptable, but no graphic depictions. May include mild profanity.
  • Young Adult (16+): Suitable for readers age 16 or older. May contain moderate violence, profanity, sexual themes, mild nudity, and consumption of alcohol or drugs. May also include themes of self-harm, bullying, and abuse.
  • Mature (18+): Suitable for readers age 18 or older. Contains graphic imagery, violence, profanity, nudity, or sexual themes. Though explicit sexual content may not be present, this rating is strictly recommended for older/mature readers.

‘Mature’ series will no longer be accessible to readers under 18.

Series rated ‘All Ages,’ ‘Teen,’ or ‘Young Adult’ will be visible to all readers.

If your series has been assigned ‘Mature’ and you would like to appeal the designation, you may reach out to creatorsupport@webtoon.com. If interested, Creator Support can work with you to update your series to meet the criteria of a different Content Rating, so it can be visible and appropriate for your intended readers.

With the update of Content Rating, all  WEBTOON™ Community Policy and Uploading Guidelines will remain the same. Our Content Rating definitions are intended to adhere to industry standards. Please ensure that your series continues to follow guidelines outlined in the Community Policy page.

Thank you to our Creators for their continued dedication to keeping the community safe.

With CANVAS supporting global distribution across seven languages later this year, this is an important step towards helping Creators reach new international audiences, grow their fandoms worldwide, and build sustainable careers on WEBTOON.

The improved questionnaire is designed to give you confidence that your work is reaching the right audience, in the right way.
